Scissor Hands from Farheap Solutions Reduces Cuts by 60% and Slashes Training Time from Weeks to Minutes

Dresden, Germany – Farheap Solutions, a leading provider of advanced solutions for the printing industry that manage print processes at every stage, and its subsidiary OpenSoft, today reported that it will be demonstrating its Scissor Hands Smart Cutting solution at drupa, the world’s largest printing trade show, scheduled for 31 May through 10 June in Düsseldorf. The solution will be on display in Hall 6 Booth 6E81 at the show.

Scissor Hands delivers smarter cut programs through artificial intelligence integrated with guillotine cutters. The integration process is the simplest in the industry for cutter feature enhancement. Benefits include:

  • Reducing cut times by as much as 60 percent on gang cutting.
  • Automatically sending cutting instructions to the cutter.
  • Completely eliminating complex manual calculations.

Director of Business Development at Farheap Solutions, Robert Godwin, explained, “For a facility looking to make the best use of its dedicated workers, the most exciting aspect of Scissor Hands is the way it combines artificial intelligence with readily accessible technology. Touch-screen animation showing precise instructions replaces traditional training, which can take up to six weeks to bring a novice up to speed. Now, bringing a new operator up to full-capacity production can be done in a very short time.”

Scissor Hands eliminates the workflow choke point that gang printing causes in the bindery and eliminates human operator error with full automation and animated instructions that are easy to follow.. Its full-screen animation instructs the operator when to turn the stack to the next cut, eliminating the greatest cause of waste in the bindery.

“Gang printing improves production efficiencies in the press room, but those efficiencies can often be erased in the bindery with bottlenecks and huge potential for waste and rework, especially in cutting operations,” said John Evans, Operations Manager at Print Fulfillment Services. “With Scissor Hands, gang printing is now made totally efficient. The economic benefits of making full use of the sheet no longer causes bottlenecks in the bindery due to complex cutting sequences. And our printing operation profits from the cost savings running ganged sheets delivers.”

In addition to automating setup and the cutting process, Scissor Hands tracks the operator’s jobs, start time, end time, and blade drops, collecting data for accurate labor assessment and as a basis for real-time decision-making. This data is then accessible to MIS systems or other reporting systems for tight integration or analysis.

Scissor Hands also cuts shipping costs with JDF Cut Block data from the imposition prep, creating the most efficient cut sequencing and recommending the best boxing solution. It then prints out the shipping label the moment each job is finished cutting to help cut lead times even further.

Scissor Hands is compatible with cutters such as Polar-Mohr and Itoh from 56CM to 200CM. Scissor Hands does not eliminate any original functionality of the cutter and is supported online for upgrades and performance evaluation. Other systems require additional hardware and back-up inventory, without which the cutter is not operational until service is able to arrive at your facility.

Demonstrations on the industry’s leading guillotine cutters will be held throughout drupa 2016 in Hall 6, Booth 6E81. Visitors can email for a scheduled demonstration or stop by for detailed information on how Scissor Hands creates more uptime and faster throughput, delivering an almost immediate ROI.
